Chair Yoga

Chair Yoga is for anyone who has ever hesitated to try yoga because of the challenge of getting down or rising up off the floor as required for a traditional yoga class. Even if you have a bad knee or a sore back, you can do yoga.  Now a chair becomes your mat. This unique yoga style adapts yoga positions through creative use of the chair. The student is able to warm up the body safely and perform yoga poses with more support and stability. Most of the class is performed seated in the chair or standing by the chair using the chair for balance and support. Chair Yoga is suitable for all ages, fitness levels and physical conditions. The class also includes breathing techniques, stretching, strengthening, meditation and a lot of fun – all while sitting in a chair!

In the same way that the body moves through flows of motion in relation to the breath in a traditional yoga, chair yoga uses this same practice as well. Almost any traditional yoga posture can be replicated and modified to a seated position to accommodate the use of a chair as a prop.  The benefits of chair yoga are the ability to move the body through a wide range of motion even if there are injuries, physical disabilities or low mobility.  Even the fittest person can practice yoga in a chair in their office, or on a plane to stretch stiff muscles, keep joints mobile and improve blood flow.

Chair Yoga can help with stress reduction, reducing anxiety and improving overall mood.  It can help with pain management as well as assisting in getting a good night sleep.  Gentle movement with awareness and attention to breath encourages better circulation and increased flexibility. Awaken areas of the body that have been inactive, soothe aching joints and create serenity and peace of mind.

Say no more, I'm ready to try Chair Yoga.
